Excessive heating of the engine, or a weak set of temperature, indicates a malfunction of the thermostat. To be more precise, there is a breakdown in the thermosensitive element, which is jammed in the extreme position.
The thermostat in the engine cooling system acts as a switch for the direction of movement of the coolant. With its help, the liquid changes the direction of movement. When the engine warms up, the liquid circulates in a small cooling circle, and when a certain temperature is reached, the radiator is also connected. On Chevrolet cars, the thermostat is set differently, depending on the model.
On the Chevrolet Lacetti, for example, it is installed above the gearbox, like on domestic Kalina. And on a Chevrolet Lanos, you will have to remove the timing belt to get to the thermostat, since it is installed under the belt. But the function of the node does not change from this. To replace the thermostat, you will need a set of keys and screwdrivers. A container for coolant is also useful, it must be at least seven liters in volume.
Replacing the thermostat on a Chevrolet Lanos
Perhaps the most difficult thing to remove is a thermostat on this particular model. Disconnect the negative terminal immediately and drain the coolant. This is the preparation of the car for repair. It is not necessary to replace the entire thermostat; it is enough to remove the rubber O-ring and the thermosensitive element. Only these parts must be replaced, the thermostat housing does not wear out and does not fail. Unless it was accidentally damaged by something heavy.
First remove the shroud that covers the timing belt. Note that it is not necessary to completely remove the belt, so there is no need to lift the right side. It is enough to remove the belt from the camshaft gear. Then you need to unscrew the bolts securing the thermostat cover, and using a screwdriver, remove it from the cylinder block. Under the lid you will find a rubber ring that must be replaced, even if it is in perfect shape. Remove the thermosensitive element from the cover and replace it with a new one.
Replacing the thermostat on the Chevrolet Lacetti
On this model, everything is a little simpler, since there is no need to remove the timing belt. The thermostat is located above the gearbox, like the Lada Kalina. The design of the thermostat is similar to that installed on Lanos. Preparation for repair includes disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery, as well as draining the coolant.
Carry out repairs on a cold engine, because the coolant is hot. If hot liquid comes into contact with the skin, it will cause injury. In the thermostat, the rubber ring and the thermosensitive element installed in the cover must be replaced.
To check, it is necessary to put the sensitive element in a container with water and gradually heat it up. A thermometer must be used to control the temperature of the liquid. Of course, the scale of the thermometer should be up to 110-120 degrees Celsius, so you cannot use household appliances. When the water boils, the thermostat should open fully. The difference between the initial position of the valve and the current one must be at least 0.7 centimeters.
