By design, the clutch on GAZ cars is a relatively reliable unit. But there are also low-quality clutch kits installed on a new car. In addition, the harsh driving style of the vehicle will significantly shorten its lifespan. You don't need complicated equipment or special skills to change the clutch yourself.

Necessary

  • - observation pit, overpass or lift with general or portable lighting;
  • - a set of open-end, ring and socket wrenches, heads and extension cords.

Instructions

Step 1

Place the vehicle on an inspection pit, overpass or lift. Fix securely to the lift. On the inspection pit or overpass, block the braking system of the machine with the parking brake, install with wheel chocks. Disconnect the battery and starter terminals. Unscrew the propeller shaft mounting bolts. If the universal joint is equipped with an outboard bearing, unscrew its fastening as well.

Step 2

Unscrew the exhaust system mount from the transmission and from the exhaust manifold. Carefully unscrew the exhaust system retaining nuts: if the studs break, you will have to remove the entire exhaust manifold. Please note: the nuts of the exhaust pipe must be copper, if they are metal, replace them.

Step 3

Inside the passenger compartment (cab), set the gear lever to neutral, then unscrew the lever mount and remove it together with the rubber casing. Using a jack, slightly raise the engine from the flywheel side, unscrew the transmission cross-arms and remove them. Unscrew the nuts securing the gearbox to the protective casing (bell). Remove the clutch slave cylinder mounting bolts.

Step 4

To remove the gearbox, gently, with small movements up and down, pull it in the direction of the rear axle. This operation is best done in conjunction with an assistant. With the transmission removed, unscrew the starter bolts and then unscrew and remove all other bolts. Clean the engine mass from corrosion and dirt. After removing all the mounting bolts, remove the casing (bell) by tapping lightly on it with a copper hammer.

Step 5

Remove the clutch fork by unscrewing the mounting bolt. Dismantle the clutch plate with the disc by unscrewing the 6 bolts of its fastening. If the bearing of the input shaft is installed in the flywheel, it should not have jamming when rotating and various extraneous noises. If not, replace it. To do this, fill the cavity behind the bearing with laundry soap. This will greatly facilitate its removal.

Step 6

Install a new clutch kit in reverse order. When installing the basket, correctly install the clutch disc and center it.
