When your car overheats, or the engine cannot reach the set temperature, then the thermostat is out of order. It allows, when starting and warming up the engine, the coolant moves first in a small circle, and then in a large circle. Usually it cannot be repaired and it is better to replace it immediately.
Necessary
Coolant, screwdriver or wrench, 8-10 liter drain container, new thermostat
Instructions
Step 1
Locate the part and how the thermostat is located. It is usually located where the cooling pipe (top or bottom) fits directly to the engine.
Step 2
Buy a new thermostat. Before that, read the information about the car make (year of manufacture, model). If the brand and type of thermostat is not determined, then it is best to contact a specialized service center. Existing catalog systems will allow you to quickly determine the model of the part you need.
Step 3
Drain the coolant from the engine and radiator. To do this, unscrew the special drain plugs on the engine housing and at the bottom of the radiator. The liquid should be drained into a container, 8-10 liters, depending on the volume of the cooling system. Screw the drain plugs back in place right away so you don't forget.
Step 4
Remember how the thermostat stands. Disconnect the pipes of the cooling system from the thermostat, usually there are three of them - upper, middle and lower, for this, first remove the clamps that hold the pipe and the thermostat using a screwdriver, pliers or a wrench. If the car engine is still hot, be careful, hot coolant residues can injure you.
Step 5
If the thermostat is attached to the engine housing, remove the mounting bolts and remove the old thermostat. Pay attention to the gasket between the motor and the thermostat housing. It must be removed and replaced with a new one.
Step 6
Take a new thermostat, having previously lubricated all parts that come into contact with the coolant (thermostat pipes, connection with gasket) with sealant. Install the part in the same position as it was before. Connect the lower and upper pipes of the cooling system to the thermostat using clamps, and if it is attached directly to the engine, then you must first attach it to the engine.
Step 7
Take a new coolant and fill it into the system. This should be done slowly, in several steps, until the entire system is full.
