The ignition timing procedure is applicable for all popular models: Camry, Land Cruiser, Corolla, RAV4, 4Runner and others. If on any particular model the ignition installation procedure differs from the generally accepted one, this information is contained in the information plate of the car. In this case, follow the instructions on the plate.

Necessary

  • - set of wrenches;
  • - screwdrivers;
  • - stroboscope;
  • - tachometer

Instructions

Step 1

Connect the tachometer to a power source (car battery) and to the IG pin of the diagnostic connector. If the vehicle is equipped with a tachometer on the dashboard as standard, there is no need to install an external tachometer. Also on the diagnostic connector, short-circuit terminals E1 and TE1. After making sure the ignition is off, connect the stroboscope according to the manufacturer's instructions for this device. In almost all cases, you will have to connect its power to the battery: the positive wire to the positive terminal, the negative wire to the negative terminal. Also, put the winding of the strobe induction sensor on the high-voltage wire of the first cylinder.

Step 2

Disconnect and plug vacuum hoses. Use standard die-cast models available from auto parts stores for plugs. Please note that access to the ignition distributor is difficult on some Toyota models, so prepare a bent key in advance. Locate the ignition setting marks on the front cover and crankshaft pulley.

Step 3

Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature, guided by the readings of the coolant thermometer on the instrument panel. Make sure the upper radiator hose is hot. According to the tachometer readings, make sure that the idle speed meets the requirements of the vehicle operating instructions (820-900 rpm).

Step 4

Aim the strobe light on the scale located on the front crankshaft oil seal holder with the rubber plug removed. Make sure that the mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the mark 10 degrees before TDC on the scale. The permissible deviation is no more than 1 degree before TDC. If the indicated marks do not substantially coincide, loosen the ignition distributor mounting bolt and begin to slowly turn the distributor housing until the marks on the scale and on the pulley align. After that, tighten the distributor mounting bolt and once again check that the ignition timing is not lost when tightening this bolt.

Step 5

Remove the jumper from the diagnostic connector. Switch off the ignition and remove the instruments installed on the engine.
