If the year of manufacture of a car made abroad is not indicated in the vehicle title, is it possible to determine it by the VIN code? In most cases, it is possible, since, for example, in American cars, the indication of the year of manufacture in the VIN is mandatory.
Instructions
Step 1
However, in many other countries, the VIN is only a recommendation, so not all firms put it down. What is VIN and where to find the year of the car in it?
Step 2
VIN stands for “Vehicle Identification Number”, ie the vehicle identification number, which consists of seventeen positions of the alphanumeric code. This code contains information about the make and model of the car, the year of manufacture and the number of the body or car. This code is used in twenty-four countries belonging to ISO - the International Organization for Standards. The VIN is stamped on the body of the vehicle.
Step 3
The first three digits of the code indicate the manufacturer, positions from the fourth to the eighth - the type of vehicle, the ninth position remains free, but the tenth or eleventh just indicates the year of manufacture. The remaining positions from twelfth to seventeenth give the body or vehicle number.
Step 4
American factories indicate the year of manufacture in eleventh place, and the same is done by European manufacturers of "Ford," and manufacturers such as "Audi," Renault, "Porsche," Saab, "Volkswagen," Honda, "Volvo," Isuzu, "VAZ," Opel, Rover, Jaguar and some other firms less well-known in Russia are in the tenth place.
Step 5
The vehicle year is a letter or a number. The exact designations can be found in special reference books, for example, for Russia the “Autoident” reference book has been published in Russian, where you can find information on almost all cars produced all over the world. The principle of codification can be explained as follows: from 1971 to 1979 - numbers from 1 to 9; from 1980 to 2000 - Latin letters from A to Y (except for O, Q and U, as well as, respectively, the last letter of the alphabet Z); from 2001 to 2009 - again numbers from 1 to 9; and starting in 2010, Latin letters again, starting with A. Following these simple tips, you can easily find out the year of manufacture of the car.
