If you often have to ride a bike long distances, then you probably thought about equipping it with a motor and thus making a moped. At the same time, it will be possible to ride without physical exertion and at the same time all the advantages of a bicycle will remain - lightness, mobility, no age restrictions.

It is necessary

  • - bicycle;
  • - gasoline or electric engine;
  • - used moped;
  • - pulleys;
  • - drive belt;
  • - fastening elements;
  • - pipes;
  • - headlight;
  • - electrical wires and switches;
  • - stop signal.

Instructions

Step 1

Take an old bike and test it for reliability. Please note that the motor will immediately increase the load on all parts of the bike, so everything should be in perfect order. Lubricate all moving parts, change chain, rear hub cassette, brakes, tires, derailleur cable and other critical parts as needed.

Step 2

Find a motor for your moped. You can use a motor from an old moped, a gasoline lawn mower, or a chainsaw. Before dismantling the motor, test it for operability, as well as for the noise level (in any case, you will no longer be able to enjoy the singing of birds). In addition, select the engine in terms of power - a moped with a 1 hp engine, most likely, will not be able to move on its own, and on the slides it will have to be helped by pedals. More powerful engines are more comfortable, but also heavier.

Step 3

Install a driven pulley on the rear wheel, which will transmit rotation from the motor to the wheel. To do this, take a regular bicycle rim slightly smaller than your rear wheel (2 inches or 6 cm), fix it well so that it rotates with the wheel.

Step 4

On the bike frame under the seat, weld additional pipes and a sheet metal stand to accommodate the engine. Place the gas tank on the top tube of the frame. Weld or secure the motor to the bike with hose clamps. If the frame design allows, mount the motor at the rear, on the bike rack.

Step 5

Connect the motor to the pulley using a drive belt. Carefully inspect the belt before installation - it will have to withstand heavy loads.

Step 6

Given the new capabilities of your old bike, you will most likely need a new seat. Make it from plywood, lay it with foam rubber and upholstery with leatherette using a furniture stapler. Then attach to the moped.

Step 7

Be sure to equip your homemade moped with a headlight in front and brake lights in the back, because with the purchase of a moped you turn into a full-fledged road user.
