Modern diesel cars have a lot of fans. They are not inferior in power to cars with a gasoline engine and even have advantages: more torque and economical fuel consumption. Only one thing repels from buying such a car - the diesel engine does not start well in winter. But this problem can be easily solved.

Many car owners face the problem of starting a diesel engine in frost. This is due, first of all, to the fact that a diesel engine needs a higher temperature to start working than a gasoline one. In addition, at low temperatures, a kind of flakes are formed in diesel fuel - the result of paraffin crystallization. They make it difficult for the diesel to pass through the fuel filter. That is why it is recommended not to use a diesel car in cold weather.

How to Avoid Diesel Starting Problems

The owner of a car with a diesel engine needs to install a good energy-consuming battery that has a high starting current. You should also select a quality diesel fuel designed specifically for winter conditions. It is worth paying close attention to this point, since in Russia very often summer diesel fuel is sold at the beginning of winter, it is more viscous.

In addition, an anti-gel diesel additive should be used, which improves the lubricity of the fuel, thereby improving its quality. It is imperative to switch to engine oil designed for the cold season.

How to help the engine start

First you need to squeeze the clutch and extend the choke. It is used exclusively for starting a car. Then you should turn the key, turn on the electrical appliances and wait for the glow plug bulb to go out. Let the battery warm up and turn on the headlights.

Then you need to turn on the ignition and turn the starter until the engine starts. The main thing is not to interrupt the startup attempt. After the engine starts to work, add a little gas. Do not release the clutch under any circumstances. This will allow the engine to run at normal rpm.

If, after all the manipulations performed, the car still does not start, then it is worth trying to use special means for cold starting the engine, which must be injected into the air intake before starting work.

In addition, pre-starting heaters have recently been in demand among owners of diesel cars. They heat either the fuel or the engine. Fuel preheaters will be much cheaper than their competitors, but their only task is to prevent the fuel from freezing in the cold. Prestarting engine heaters make it possible not only to facilitate engine warming up, but also to increase the temperature in the vehicle interior.

These techniques can help you start the engine in temperatures down to –20 ° C. If the frost is more than -25 ° C, it is recommended to refuse the trip.
