The tachometer is the number one instrument for the professional driver and anyone aspiring to become one. It is he who helps to determine the most optimal operating mode of the engine, which includes indicators of power, economy and resource. If your car is not equipped with such a device, do so.

It is necessary

  • - tachometer with connection kit;
  • - wiring, fuse;
  • - screwdriver, insulating tape.

Instructions

Step 1

Purchase a device. Examine the back of the case carefully. Find the cylinder count switch and set it to match your engine. Choose a location on the dashboard where it is best to install the tachometer. To do this, sit in the driver's seat and select the installation place so that the new device is clearly visible, does not obstruct the steering wheel and does not interfere with driving.

Step 2

Mark and drill holes for tachometer bracket installation. Fasten the device bracket with the standard fixing screws. Also drill an additional hole for routing the wires.

Step 3

Connect four wires to the tachometer. The first wire is ground (black). It can be connected to the negative terminal of the battery, but it will be easier to secure it to the nearest screw installed on the car body. When choosing the second option, strip the connection to ensure better contact.

Step 4

Connect the red wire to either the positive terminal of the battery, or to the contact of the ignition switch, on which a positive voltage appears when the ignition is turned on. When choosing the first option, equip the tachometer with an off toggle switch with a warning light. This is necessary so that the device does not drain the battery when it is parked for a long time.

Step 5

Regardless of the selected option for connecting the red wire, it is necessary to cut in the fuse if it is not provided for by the tachometer design. Usually, Chinese manufacturers of such devices save on fuses.

Step 6

The third wire is signal. Most often it is green. If the tachometer is of a non-contact design, wrap it with 4-5 turns around the high voltage wire leading to the spark plug tip from the engine ignition module at a distance of at least 50 mm from the spark plug tip. Then secure the threads with a standard plastic band or electrical tape so that they will not move completely under any circumstances.

Step 7

On the tachometer of the contact structure, the signal wire is connected to the ignition coil or switch. At the same time, stretch it so that it is not chafed or overheated. On injection engines, connect the signal wire to the engine compartment diagnostic connector or directly to the computer through the ESU. Disconnect the positive wire from the battery terminal before connecting.

Step 8

The remaining wire is used to illuminate the instrument, so it is not available on all tachometer models. Plug it into your cigarette lighter.
