The steering column refers to the gearbox, which is responsible for transferring motion from the steering wheel to the rods. As a result of this, a change in the direction of movement of the vehicle occurs. But, like all other parts of the car, the steering column eventually deteriorates due to wear, and this affects traffic safety. Therefore, it is important to monitor the condition of the column and promptly replace it.
It is necessary
- - tongs;
- - spanner key;
- - chisel;
- - pliers.
Instructions
Step 1
In order to remove the steering column, you do not need to use special equipment, a standard set of tools is sufficient. All work on the removal of the column is carried out in the passenger compartment and in the engine compartment.
Step 2
To begin with, remove the steering wheel and turn off the ignition, then with a No.13 spanner wrench, unscrew the bolt that connects the flange of the intermediate shaft elastic coupling to the steering gear, and remove it together with the spring washer.
Step 3
Loosen the shear head bolt. You can find it in the place of the left front attachment of the speaker bracket to the body. The easiest way to loosen the bolt is with a chisel, and you can unscrew it all the way with pliers. Do the same with the right mounting bolt.
Step 4
Now unscrew the nuts of the left and right rear securing the column bracket to the car body using a spanner wrench, then slide the intermediate shaft off the splines of the gear shank.
Step 5
After the shaft has been removed from the splines, you can easily remove the steering column, on which you will need to replace the intermediate steering shaft. To do this, unscrew the nut of the bolt of the terminal connection of the upper and intermediate shafts. When doing this, do not forget to hold the bolt with a wrench so that it does not turn. Now take it out and slide the shaft.
Step 6
To adjust the tightening torque of the steering column retainer, use pliers to spread the retaining ring and carefully remove it. Then remove the lock lever from the slots and move it to the correct position.
Step 7
Installation of the steering column after repair must be done in the reverse order, remembering to combine the flat on the shaft with the slot of the terminal.
