Consistent engine idling is very important. In this case, the revolutions should not be high and "float". Fuel consumption, load on car parts and much more depend on this. Therefore, every motorist should know how to adjust the idle speed of his "iron horse".
Instructions
Step 1
Use a tachometer or voltmeter to measure the number of revolutions of the crankshaft and their stability. Ideally, only a tachometer can provide complete RPM information. The tachometer is a gauge with graduations that shows the crankshaft revolutions per minute. This value should not exceed 1000 rpm. The ideal option is 600-700 rpm. In this case, the engine should not stall and vibrate strongly (triple). A voltmeter for these purposes is much worse. But if your car is not equipped with a tachometer, then the readings of this device will help you determine the stability of the revolutions. With a steady idle speed, the voltmeter needle should not "jump" and go beyond the red zone.
Step 2
Sink the air damper. Now, using a screwdriver, turn the carburetor adjuster, which is responsible for the "quantity". Determine the drop in RPM by ear. You can also ask someone to monitor the tachometer readings. If the speed does not drop, then inspect the idle speed sensor, if it is faulty, replace it. Some carburetor models have a dedicated idle control. Otherwise, use a screwdriver. Having achieved the desired value of revolutions, check their stability. For a few minutes, the rpm should not "float" and the engine should not triple. Otherwise, it is necessary to purge or replace the jets.
Step 3
Adjust the speed with the throttle valve. This is necessary when starting a cold engine and then warming it up at high revs. Don't worry if the engine stalls at idle speed when cold. With the help of the choke, gradually reduce the speed of the warmed-up engine. To do this, sink it. Remember that the tachometer should be at minimum values when the air damper is recessed. If a warm engine stalls in this case, then check the idle speed sensor. You can also add some rpm to the carburetor.
