Before carrying out repairs to the body or its individual parts, it is necessary to clean it from the paintwork. The same is done before tin work, when removing corrosion and when filling small dents. Removing paint before work allows you to make the subsequent painting of higher quality, without glare and peeling of the coating. There are four known methods for removing paint from the body.

Step 1
The most widely used method of removing paint with abrasive materials. In order to quickly and efficiently remove old paint using this method, use a grinder. The better the chosen tool and the more experience in performing similar work, the faster and better the paint removal task will be. This method is very useful for partial repairs with partial removal of old paint. Use a drill with a wire brush for stripping in hard-to-reach places. When doing this work, start with a coarse abrasive, gradually moving down to a finer one. In this way, large scratches on the surface to be cleaned can be avoided.
Step 2
The shot-blasting method of removing old paintwork is more often used for retro cars with multiple body repairs in the past. In such cases, the first method (using abrasive materials) will be unreasonably laborious and extremely inconvenient for cleaning the internal parts of a complex shape. Sandblasting is used when it is necessary to quickly remove paint from large surfaces while maintaining the desired quality of work. To use a sandblaster, a specially equipped separate room is required. Completely disassemble the body before processing, clean the coatings completely, to metal. Sandblasting gives the surfaces some roughness. Subsequently, new paint will fit better on such surfaces.
Step 3
If it is impossible to use abrasive processing and inappropriate sandblasting, use a chemical method. To do this, purchase a chemical paint remover from a car dealer. Apply this remover to the paintwork: the remover will soften the old paint, it will swell and swell, weakening its adhesion to the metal. In the future, the peeled coating can be easily removed by any mechanical method. Usually, a wooden spatula is used for this, followed by wiping with a rag dipped in gasoline or white alcohol. If the paintwork has not been completely removed, repeat the procedure. If necessary, perform cleaning in a confined space, protect the untreated surfaces with technical vaseline. Then rinse it off with warm water.
Step 4
Cleaning the body from old paint by firing is mainly used to remove thick layers of old paint on large surfaces. Use a blowtorch for this method. When firing with a blowtorch, the old paintwork partially burns out, and partially softens and peels off the metal. After firing, remove the remaining paint particles by hand with a brush or scraper. When choosing a method for removing old paint, keep in mind that this method is quite laborious and may damage some parts.
