The congestion of the streets of Moscow with cars is one of the main problems of the capital. The fight against traffic collapse is being carried out by implementing planned measures to reorganize traffic, build and reconstruct roads, and improve the operation of public transport.
One of the reasons for the emergence of the problem of congestion in the streets is the city-planning mistakes made during the construction of Moscow. The capital was built up too densely, while the area of roads and their number turned out to be too small. Most of the workplaces and shopping centers are located in the city center. All this cannot be fixed, as Moscow Mayor Viktor Sobyanin said.
He made the fight against traffic collapse one of the main directions of his activity. At the end of 2010, the Moscow government developed a plan for the development of a transport hub “City Convenient for Life”.
One of the directions for the implementation of this plan is the creation of an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in Moscow, on which specialists from the Russian concern Sitronics are working.
The ITS includes traffic surveillance cameras, traffic congestion boards, traffic sensors, traffic sensors at traffic lights. Public transport has a satellite navigation system GLONASS. Situations on the roads will be recorded in the Traffic Management Center, and from 2014 on the center's website there will be up-to-date information for drivers about traffic jams in Moscow.
One of the measures to combat congestion on the streets is an agreement between the city authorities and the owners of shopping centers to bring goods by truck to Moscow only at night. The Mayor of Moscow ordered government officials of different levels to start work at different times: officials of city institutions began work at 8 am, and officials of federal institutions at 10 am.
Dmitry Medvedev joined the fight against traffic jams in Moscow; in June 2011, the president proposed expanding the borders of Moscow and transferring state institutions outside the Moscow Ring Road in order to relieve the central part of the city. In Moscow, the construction and reconstruction of city roads continues, as a result, their throughput should increase by 30-35%. It is planned to build transport hubs at the terminal metro stations and new interchanges on the Moscow Ring Road.
Employees of the Ministry of Transport made proposals for the construction of multi-level highways - flyovers, for intra-city traffic along which the first tier will be used, and the second - for leaving the city. The implementation of these and other measures will help solve the problem of traffic congestion in Moscow.
