The car body has many places that are easily corroded. These include wheel arches, the lower part of the fenders, sills, glass frames and other elements that are often in contact with moisture. The effects of corrosion in these areas make the car look messy and, more importantly, destroy the bodywork. Therefore, it is periodically necessary to carry out a rust removal procedure, which is quite realistic to do at home.

Preparation for body repair

Always wash the vehicle thoroughly before removing rust from the body. In this case, use not only ordinary water, but also add special car shampoos. After the machine has dried, all rusty areas must be cleaned with high abrasive paper or a wire brush.

Some car owners remove the effects of corrosion with an angle grinder. But it must be remembered that this method of cleaning rust implies the use of a whole set of replaceable discs on a special plastic sole, since ordinary cleaning discs can remove too much metal from the body. If rust occupies a fairly large area, the easiest way is to use a special apparatus under the unofficial name "sandblasting".

Rust converters

In addition to the mechanical method of cleaning the body from rust, there is a chemical one. This method is carried out using chemicals - rust converters. The main purpose of such substances is to prevent rust from appearing on the metal and spreading to clean areas of the body. When such converters interact with the consequences of corrosion, the latter are converted into a substance that can be easily removed with a cloth from the repaired surface.

Rust converters come in different types and from different manufacturers, but almost all formulations use phosphoric acid. But this does not mean that the effect of such substances from different manufacturers is absolutely the same. The result depends on many factors, so when choosing a rust converter, you need to read reviews about them and listen to the advice of motorists. In the process of using such products, be sure to use rubber gloves, special goggles, etc.

Treatment of the brushed surface

After removing the rust, the areas to be repaired must be covered with a thin layer of soil mixture, then with a layer of special acrylic primer, after which the problem area must be putty. In the absence of putty experience, it is better to entrust this business to professionals, but it is quite possible to do it yourself with the right approach. Without waiting for the filler to dry, it is necessary to level the surface to be repaired with waterproof sandpaper and remove all dust, and then proceed to painting in 3 or more layers.
