There are many reasons for the appearance of rust on a car, for example, prolonged exposure to moisture in places where paint and primer are chipped. Over time, this damage increases. To stop the spread of rust, you must fight it as soon as it appears.
Precautionary measures
Take precautions before starting rust removal work. Use gloves, face shield and goggles. This is to keep paint and rust away from the lungs and eyes. Avoid open flames at the work site and do not smoke. Open flames can ignite the paint.
Body preparation
Localize the rusty surface of the vehicle and protect other areas. To do this, cover, for example, with a tarpaulin, the surfaces around the rust and secure it with adhesive tape. In this case, the area to be repaired should not be limited only by the rust itself. Select the area around the rust, it is best to select the whole body element that has been damaged. For example, if rust appears on the wing, it will be necessary to work with the entire wing, otherwise in the future you will see sharp transitions in the color of the wing, which will be difficult to fix.
Repair
Remove paint and primer from the surface to be repaired. For this, use a sander with a special disc for removing paint. With its help, it will be possible to remove small areas of rust and make the surface smooth. Install a metal grinding wheel and continue removing rust. Do this carefully so as not to damage entire areas of the body. After removing most of the damage, rust residues can be removed with phosphoric acid. Finally, smooth the surface with an emery wheel.
Primer
Prepare the surface to be repaired for the application of the primer, following the primer instructions. As a rule, the surface should be cleaned with alcohol or solvent. Apply the primer evenly in three even coats, taking a few minutes break before applying each one. Allow the primer to dry for at least 12 hours. Sandpaper the dried primer to smooth it, while wetting the paper with water.
Painting
Apply paint in thin layers to keep it from dripping. In this case, use an auto-spray, it will allow you to apply the paint as evenly as possible. Apply as many coats as necessary to achieve the desired color. After finishing applying the paint, let it dry for at least 24 hours. Remove the tarpaulin from the body and check if the edges are visible at the painted area of the body. If so, apply a colorless varnish to them. Wash and polish the car after two days.
