There are many reasons for removing rust from a car. The main reason is that under the paint pits or scratches under the primer, the metal is exposed to air and moisture, which causes it to oxidize.
Instructions
Step 1
First you need to take precautions. Wear safety goggles, gloves and a respirator, as there will be a lot of rust and colorful dust.
Step 2
Next, cover those parts of the car that should not get paint. Use masking tape or paper for this. This must be done very carefully, since the paint dust is very fine and easily adheres to the places where it is not needed.
Step 3
Now you need to remove the paint around the rust using a sandblaster (grit 150) in order to remove the paint and primer, as well as the rust that has appeared on the metal, and level the surface between the unpainted and painted area. Try to feel the smoothness of the surface.
Step 4
Next, take a sander with a metal grinding wheel to remove thick rust. When using a circle, you need to walk slowly with the typewriter, as you can do a lot of harm. Once you're done, remove the microscopic rust particles that remain with acid. Phosphoric acid is best, but sulfuric acid will work as well. Fill holes and irregularities. You need to sand it by hand to get a nice, smooth surface.
Step 5
At a car dealership, buy a primer that is suitable for the metal and paint that matches the color of your car.
Step 6
Prepare a primer site. To do this, you need to wipe all work areas with alcohol and secure newspapers in all areas adjacent to the processing site.
Step 7
Apply a thin coat of primer. In total, you need to make three coats of primer. Allow to dry for a few minutes after each coat. After applying all layers, leave for twelve hours.
Step 8
Sand the primer with fine sandpaper. Wipe everything dry.
Step 9
Apply a coat of paint, but so that there are no smudges. After painting, leave for 24 hours, then remove newspapers and tape.
Step 10
Paint the remaining edges with new paint, trying to match with the old paint. The car can be washed after 48 hours. Done.
