After tuning the engine, its power increases, and accordingly there is a need for a more powerful and efficient oil pump. Instead of installing a new one-and-a-half pump, you can modify the old one at a much lower cost.

The process of refining the oil pump for the VAZ cannot be called simple, but the result will be a noticeable increase in performance and the compliance of oil pressure with the requirements of a more powerful engine. For revision, you will need to purchase another pump, or at least some of its spare parts.

To increase pump performance, increase the gears and increase the thickness of the mounting flange. In addition, the pump drive axle must be increased and two sets of shims are used.

Working with the pump casing

The docking part must be cut off from the body of the old pump, leaving it about 12 millimeters wide. To finalize this part, you will need to visit a lathe: on a milling machine, the cut width is reduced to 10 millimeters, after processing, the end face is polished. The result is a kind of flange.

Manufacturing of compound gears

The gears from both pumps must be compressed. As a result, you get two sets of gears: two driven and two driving. From each set, one part is selected from which you need to cut the chamfer by grinding off both ends. As a result, the thickness of the gears will decrease by 0.75 millimeters on each side. The remaining parts should also be trimmed until the chamfer disappears, after which their thickness should be brought to 11, 5 millimeters. The work will result in two new sets of gears: narrow and wide. It is important that the parts in each set have the same thickness.

Alteration of the pump shaft

The pump will require a new driven gear, 10-11 millimeters longer than the old one. It can be made from the drive roll of the spare pump. After pressing the new part into place, first the wide and then the narrow gear from the new set of parts should be installed on it. The gears are put on the drive shaft in the reverse order so that during docking there is a displacement that prevents spontaneous rotation of the gears on the axles.

Assembling a new pump

When the gear train is assembled, it should be turned several times, thus checking the freedom of movement. If everything is in order, you can assemble the pump. You can put a standard gasket between the body and the additional flange, but it is better to seal it with a sealant, since the product will no longer be disassembled. You will also need to remove 10 millimeters of thickness from the base of the oil receiver or cut its neck in two and connect it with a flexible hose on clamps.
