Modern cars are constantly being improved with plastic body kits called aero kits or body kits. Many companies and tuning studios make bumpers of an unusual shape, but their products are quite expensive. But you can make a bumper yourself.
Necessary
Epoxy resin, fiberglass, brushes, masking tape, foil, polystyrene, polyurethane foam, donor bumper
Instructions
Step 1
We place the donor bumper from the car on a locksmith's workbench or a specially made stand in the garage. We paste over its back (inner) side with masking tape in several layers.
Step 2
We mark the location of the structural elements of the bumper on the layer of adhesive tape - these can be technological holes for air intake, tuning elements, holes for additional optics, etc.
Step 3
We glue the pieces of styrofoam to the bumper directly on the layer of masking tape. Using a sharp knife, we give the foam the required shape. We also glue the foam at the bumper attachment points to the car.
Step 4
At the edges of the donor bumper, we fix pieces of cardboard and also paste over them with masking tape. This is necessary to keep the paint foam from spreading. We fill the required places with painting foam. Leave it for a few hours to solidify completely.
Step 5
Remove the cardboard around the edges of the bumper. We remove the old bumper from the frozen structure. Previously glued tape will help to carry out this operation much easier. Using sandpaper and a sharp knife, we clean the edges of the resulting base of the future bumper. We bring the condition to a flat and smooth surface.
Step 6
We glue the entire base of the bumper with foil and proceed with the application of epoxy resin and fiberglass. First we coat the foil with epoxy, then apply a layer of fiberglass. We smooth it out with a plastic scraper, avoiding the formation of folds or air bubbles. Then again we apply a layer of epoxy resin and a new layer of fiberglass. We repeat the procedure 5-6 times. We leave the bumper to dry completely.
Step 7
Disconnect the entire structure. First, we extract the base. For easier removal, it may be necessary to cut it into pieces. We polish the resulting new bumper with an emery cloth to a perfectly flat surface. Then we prime and paint. The self-made bumper is ready.
