To accurately determine the set clearance on the bearings in the front wheel hub of cars of the classic VAZ line, expensive equipment is required, which does not make sense for an ordinary motorist to purchase.

Step 1
But from time to time, the car owner sometimes still has to change the worn out front hub bearings on his own. And without a properly set gap between the rollers and the inner surface of the bearing cage, the operation of the car is impossible. Otherwise, the bearing will collapse in a very short period of time, not having run even a couple of hundred kilometers.
Step 2
After replacing the indicated bearings, when tightening the wheel hub nut, it must be taken into account that it is by no means recommended to screw it all the way in.
Step 3
Tightening the nut with a hub wrench with one hand, the wheel is constantly spinning with the other, and at the moment of increasing the applied force, the screwing of the nut on the trunnion stops. At this stage, with the palms of the hands, it is necessary to strike two blows on the side surface of the wheel, in the upper and lower parts, following alternately with a short period of time.
Step 4
At the same time, a slight knock of the wheel bearing should be heard, taking into account that the gap between the rollers and the cage is 0.2 mm. If there is a knock, then the flange of the nut is bent into the groove of the trunnion.
Step 5
The complete absence of backlash indicates that the nut needs to be loosened a little, by about 1/6 of its full turn.
Step 6
Excessive bearing play requires the opposite action - the nut tightens slightly. Thus, by tightening and unscrewing the nut, it is necessary to achieve a slight, barely perceptible, knock of the bearing in the wheel hub.
