Car engine attachment drive belts stretch over time, which reduces their tension. This causes an unpleasant whistle when the generator and power steering are running.
It is necessary
- - a set of keys;
- - garage with a pit;
- - jack;
- - emery;
- - flashlight;
- - screwdriver.
Instructions
Step 1
Determine which side the power steering is on. To do this, look at which unit the hoses are supplied from the steering rack.
Step 2
Drive the car into a hole, be sure to apply the parking brake, then remove the front wheel from the side where the power steering is located. When jacking up the machine, place a plank or block of wood under the front arm to prevent the vehicle from falling during operation. Remember that manufacturers do not recommend using the jack as a stand.
Step 3
Remove the engine protection. To do this, using a screwdriver, remove all the plastic clips on which the apron is attached, then using a socket wrench, unscrew the mounting bolts, if any.
Step 4
Take a flashlight or carrier with a light bulb and carefully inspect the power steering mount. Find the adjusting bolt. If a lot of dirt has accumulated on the unit, clean it and the bolts that you will loosen with a wire brush.
Step 5
Use a wrench to remove the power steering hinge bolt. It so happens that there is very little space between the head of this bolt and the wall of the engine compartment, an ordinary spanner wrench cannot unscrew it and erases the edges on the head, and a socket wrench cannot get there due to the high height of the head of this key. In this case, you will have to grind off the head of the socket wrench on emery to unscrew the hinge bolt, otherwise you will not budge the power steering housing.
Step 6
Using a spanner wrench, turn the adjusting bolt until the belt is tensioned. It is not necessary to tighten too much, otherwise the bearing on the hydraulic booster will quickly fail. The optimum belt tension is 5-7kg. It can be indirectly determined by the deflection of the belt by pressing the middle with your finger with a force of about 3-4 kg. With a short length, when the pulleys are close, the belt should be pressed 3-5mm, with a distance of about 40-50cm, the belt can be pressed 1.5-2cm.
Step 7
An over-tension test should also be done. To do this, grasp the belt with your fingers in the middle between the pulleys, pull and release, like a string on a guitar. If the sound made by the belt was short and low, then everything is fine. If the sound is long with a high pitch, then the belt is overtightened and it is necessary to reduce its tension.
