Before removing the lambda probe, disconnect the negative cable from the corresponding battery terminal. Disconnect the wire connector coming from the sensor. Disconnect the wiring fasteners. Then, using a 22 or 24 wrench, try to unscrew the probe from the exhaust manifold. If this does not succeed even with the use of maximum efforts, then the thread has stuck over the years of operation, or the sensor was originally installed with a bias.

Necessary

  • - adjustable wrench;
  • - drill with thin drills;
  • - screwdriver, hammer;
  • - WD 40 liquid

Instructions

Step 1

Before removing the lambda probe, disconnect the negative cable from the corresponding battery terminal. Disconnect the wire connector coming from the sensor. Disconnect the wiring fasteners. Then, using a 22 or 24 wrench, try to unscrew the probe from the exhaust manifold. If this does not succeed even with the use of maximum efforts, it means that the thread has stuck over the years of operation, or the sensor was originally installed with a bias.

Step 2

Spray WD 40 fluid on the visible surface of the lambda threads and try to unscrew it with an adjustable (gas) wrench or pull it down. If that doesn't work, re-drill the probe. The material from which it is made is highly durable, so be prepared for the fact that several drills will break when drilling. Insert a slotted screwdriver of sufficient thickness into the resulting hole and try to unscrew the sensor. If necessary, tap the screwdriver or sensor with a hammer.

Step 3

Remove the catalytic converter or exhaust manifold. In any way, heat the place where the lambda is installed and try to unscrew it. If unsuccessful, try again after the metal has cooled down. With this method, you heat up the mounting place of the probe and its threads. In this case, rust in the thread, unlike metal, does not expand, but leads to the formation of microcracks. This allows the sensor to be unscrewed relatively easily in many cases.

Step 4

After applying extreme methods of dismantling the lambda, residues from the old sensor may remain in the thread of the mounting hole. To clean the threads, take a suitable die and gently drive it over the thread. Then clean off small chips and spray with WD 40 liquid so that after installing a new sensor, it can be unscrewed without problems.

Step 5

On some models of Japanese cars, the lambda probe is screwed into a specialized nut that can be replaced after unscrewing the sensor. Order or buy such a nut in advance. Its cost is low, but the delivery time of the order can stretch for a couple of weeks.
