To perform many of the variator repair and maintenance operations, it must be unscrewed. Advanced scooter owners unscrew it to replace it with a tuned model. The procedure for removing the variator is of an average category of complexity, but with a certain accuracy and diligence, it is also available for beginners.
It is necessary
- - a set of keys and heads;
- - pullers;
- - screwdrivers;
- - a hammer.
Instructions
Step 1
Clean any debris from the clutch housing so that all mounting bolts are visible. Remove the kick starter foot mounting bolt. Then remove all screws on the variator cover. Many bolts are difficult to access, so you have to be smart when loosening them. Place the removed bolts in a separate, non-dirty container so as not to lose them.
Step 2
If, after removing all fasteners, the cover does not come off, gently tap the edges with a hammer or a sufficiently large wrench, and then pull, swinging it towards you. At the same time, check the gasket between the cover and the crankcase to avoid tearing it. If this does happen, make a new one from thick paper or paranite of the same thickness.
Step 3
Partially dismantle the kick-starter mechanism located on the crankshaft. To do this, first remove the locking washer with a screwdriver, and then all other parts of the mechanism from the shaft. Remember the procedure for removing parts. Mark the parts themselves in any convenient way.
Step 4
After removing the housing cover, screw one of the bolts into the hole above the variator and prepare a puller. Manufacturers recommend the use of branded pullers, but if they are absent, oil filter pullers from VAZ cars will do. Place the clutch chain over the impeller by hooking one of the links onto the hook of the puller. Try to keep the chain free play as small as possible. Then manually start turning the variator against the direction of travel until the puller rests on the bolt previously screwed over the housing. This procedure is called clutching the variator.
Step 5
Squeeze the clutch plates with your hands so that the belt slack. Hold the plates and remove the belt. Unscrew the nut on the crankshaft. Then remove the kick starter crown and clutch impeller. Memorize or write down the sequence of the removed parts.
Step 6
Use a spanner wrench to loosen the variator mounting bolt. In many cases this bolt is difficult to access and an extension head will have to be used. Note that if this is the first time the variator is removed, it will be very difficult to remove this bolt. If your efforts are not enough, invite an assistant. For safety, block the rotation of the variator pulley by inserting a screwdriver between its teeth and the crankcase.
