Vehicle sills are constantly exposed to negative external influences. Reagents, gravel, impacts and chips damage the paintwork, and contact with moisture 9 months a year and temperature changes complete the job - the metal rusts. But don't despair! Everyone can digest the rusted threshold himself.

It is necessary

  • - welding machine
  • - grinder
  • - scissors for metal
  • - sandpaper or sanding discs (in this case you will need a drill or grinder)
  • - car putty
  • - rubber or plastic spatula
  • - respirator
  • - protective glasses
  • - protective gloves
  • - new threshold and amplifier
  • - auto enamel
  • - varnish
  • - primer
  • - spray gun

Instructions

Step 1

Remove the rusty threshold. It is convenient to do this with an ordinary grinder. First, we cut the threshold along the seam along the racks of the car, then we finish what we started with a chisel and a hammer. At the end, it is necessary to clean the box on which the threshold is attached from rust and remnants of the old threshold. Welding points also need to be cleaned. Use sandpaper or go over all rusted areas with a drill with a sander.

Step 2

Prepare the threshold amplifier for installation on the vehicle. Using metal scissors, cut notches where the amplifier will rest against the car pillars. It is also necessary to make technological holes in the places of future spot welding. This can be done using the same metal scissors.

Step 3

Install the threshold amplifier. Secure it in place with quick release clamps, magnets or rivets. After the amplifier is securely fixed in its future place, and you are sure that everything was done and cut correctly, weld the part using spot welding. Using this type of welding will help to avoid thick and unsightly seams, which means it will make them easier to align. Grind off excess metal at the end of welding.

Step 4

Prepare a new threshold for installation. You should proceed with it in the same way as with the amplifier: cut out the excess metal in the area of the struts with scissors, adjusting the threshold to the body, and make technological holes for welding. The edges of the part and its front should be slightly folded inward to facilitate installation.

Step 5

Weld on the sill blank. Fix the threshold in the same way as the amplifier in the previous steps. Weld the new part using spot welding and process the seams: they should be turned, if possible, covered with an anti-corrosion compound and putty to smooth out any irregularities. After filling, the parts should be sanded again.

Step 6

Paint the new thresholds. First, coat the putty surface with one or two coats of primer. When the primer is dry, apply a few coats of paint to the part and finish the job by covering the completely dry surface with varnish.
