Necessary

  • - coarse-grained and fine-grained sanding paper;
  • - spray primer;
  • - car enamel of the desired color;
  • - transparent enamel or varnish;
  • - liquid plastic;
  • - plastic care product;
  • - drill;
  • - self-adhesive fiberglass tape

Instructions

Step 1

Older cars have metal bumpers. The repair of such bumpers is quite laborious and often requires welding equipment. If, during the restoration of the steel bumper, a violation of the repair technology occurs, it will begin to rust over time. Therefore, do not attempt to repair heavily damaged metal and chrome bumpers. Just replace them with new ones.

Step 2

Plastic bumpers are more common on modern cars. They are lightweight, quick to replace, and more readily available for DIY repair, as they allow you to repair small holes without using melting technology. Repair scratches, dents and through holes yourself using a repair kit. Repair serious damage in a workshop. Do not try to eliminate numerous cracks, large holes and strong deformation. Replace this bumper with a new one.

Step 3

To repair scratches and scuffs on the bumper, sand with coarse sanding paper. At the same time, do not overdo it, so that as a result of the efforts, a depression does not form. It should be sanded until a smooth surface is obtained. Apply two coats of spray primer to the cleaned area. Dry each layer for 30 minutes. After that, treat the damaged area with fine-grained abrasive paper and wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Step 4

Paint the damaged area with three to four coats of automotive enamel. Dry each layer for at least 30 minutes. Spray the enamel from an aerosol can at a distance of 20 cm. After the basic painting, apply 2 coats of clear paint or varnish. Dry the repaired and painted bumper within 24 hours.

Step 5

To repair small chips, dents, and cracks in a plastic bumper, purchase liquid plastic that matches the type of plastic the bumper is made of. When choosing a plastic, be sure to consult with the seller.

Step 6

Remove the bumper, by all means using the instructions for the car. Clean the damaged area with a plastic care product, paying attention to the edges of the defect. Then sand the area to be repaired with sanding paper. Drill out the defect with a drill until you get a zygomatic (V-shaped) cavity.

Step 7

Apply fiberglass tape to the front of the bumper, delimiting the defective area from the rest of the surface. If your purchased liquid plastic is two-part, mix the ingredients in a separate container. Apply liquid plastic to the surface to be repaired, carefully filling the cavity. Wait for the time it takes for the plastic to cure. Then sand the repaired area and paint using the above algorithm.
