Motorists have noticed more than once that the steering wheel becomes either very tight or, on the contrary, light. A hit in any pit gives it to the steering wheel, throws it on the track, and in the middle position at the steering wheel there is a backlash, a constant unpleasant knock is heard from under the front axle. All these factors together give a disappointing conclusion: the steering rack has worked its way. There are several ways out of this situation. You can just ignore these inconveniences, you can restore the rail, or buy a new one and install it in place of the old one.
Instructions
Step 1
Place the car on a lift and remove the front wheels. Before starting to unscrew the steering rod, thoroughly moisten all bolts and nuts with a liquid wrench. Then remove the tie rod nut.
Step 2
If you have engine protection installed, remove it. Using a puller, disconnect the left and right steering tips from the steering knuckle. In the absence of a puller, take a pipe or crowbar, insert it under the steering rod and push down.
Step 3
Remove the ball joint bolt. Remove the bolts securing the engine mount, first at the top in the engine compartment and then at the bottom of the engine. Place an emphasis under the engine in the area of the gearbox to release the pillows and remove the load from the subframe, then hang the engine together with the gearbox.
Step 4
Leave the engine compartment completely empty. Install the steering rack, having previously secured the shock absorber to the rack before installation. If you do not do this, then you will have to tighten the shock absorber mounting screw in an uncomfortable position and very slowly.
Step 5
If you have power steering installed, then after installing the steering rack, flushing the system is necessary. The fluid reservoir of the power steering pump and the fluid return hose are rinsed. After filling with liquid, start the engine and turn the steering wheel in different directions to properly disperse the oil.
