Car repairs are considered challenging but lucrative. If many people do maintenance, repair of systems and assemblies of a car on their own, then not every car enthusiast is capable of repairing the body. In addition to equipment that makes it possible to restore the initial color and shape of car parts, you need experience and knowledge of the features of using all modern materials.
Necessary
gamma thickness gauge, sandblaster, alkaline solutions, hammer, anvil
Instructions
Step 1
Disassemble the body. Disassembly is complete and partial. The latter should be done when the body is in good condition and only some of its parts need to be repaired. Do a complete disassembly only during major overhauls and when most of the components need to be repaired. Before disassembling the car in a specialized room, be sure to wash the body.
Step 2
After washing, be sure to inspect the parts and assemblies that must be removed during a major overhaul (glass, interior upholstery, decorative trims, fittings, etc.). After that, remove all parts and assemblies, as well as all elements of the undercarriage. Flush the underbody a second time to remove dirt.
Step 3
Clean the body from paint and varnish materials and corrosion. Remove paint and corrosion mechanically using sandblasting machines, power hand tools, or chemical treatment with alkaline solutions and washes. When cleaning from corrosion, be sure to determine the depth of destruction in advance using a gamma thickness gauge.
Step 4
Check the geometry of the body. If the car has been in an accident, then in most cases not only the body itself is deformed. Be sure to check the location of the wheels (you may notice while driving - the car is unstable, and the rubber wears out quickly) and the control points of the diagonals.
Step 5
Prepare for repair. Disconnect generator wires and battery, remove soundproofing covers, remove mastics and paints applied to the outer surfaces of the housing during painting.
Step 6
Body parts repair. Removable parts (shields, bumpers, hood, etc.) must be replaced. If you can make an edit and it is much cheaper than a new part, choose this option. If repair of welded elements is necessary, weld them, adhering to all technical requirements. Restore the shape with a punch (hammer or pressure) or straightening (hammer using an anvil).
