A driver who has to drive a car for many hours, regardless of the season of the year, knows firsthand what a plastic steering wheel is, and what discomfort when driving is provided by sweaty palms of his hands. And if at least once he was lucky enough to drive a car with a leather steering wheel, he will do everything possible to ensure that his steering wheel also has a similar accessory.

Necessary

  • - leather (preferably automobile) - 0.5 sq. m,
  • - boot awl,
  • - scissors,
  • - sewing machine.

Instructions

Step 1

In any furrier business, the basis of the basics is a pattern. We measure the steering wheel: the length of the rim (according to the inner and outer diameters), the diameter of the steering wheel rim and the distance between the spokes. Based on the data obtained, a sketch of the pattern is made on paper. In the places of future seams, add 5 mm along the outer diameter, and subtract 5 mm along the inner diameter. After that, the layout of the future steering wheel cover is made of fabric, but it is better to use leatherette.

Step 2

The moment of fitting has come. Having imposed a mock cover on the steering wheel, the last transverse seam is sewn with an awl in place. If luck accompanied the event, and the cover satisfies the master, they proceed directly to making it from the main material.

Step 3

In those cases, when the desired result was not achieved the first time, the configuration of the patterns is adjusted, and then the fitted patterns are sewn along the transverse seams. Everything, except for the last seam, on which only the middle is stitched, and the edges are stitched exclusively on the handlebars.

Step 4

At the finishing stage, a machine-sewn cover is applied to the steering wheel. First of all, the unstitched edges of the last seam are sewn with an awl. Then proceed to stitching the inner edges of the cover. For this procedure, an awl and silk or lavsan thread are used. The seam step is 3-5 mm.
