The catalytic converter effectively purifies vehicle exhaust gases. In it, harmful hydrocarbons, carbon and nitrogen oxides are converted into non-toxic compounds - water vapor, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. It happens that catalysts become unusable and require replacement or removal. This is not difficult to do.
Necessary
Wrenches, pliers, lift or pit, new catalytic converter, electronic catalyst emulator, heat resistant pipe
Instructions
Step 1
Determine if the catalyst has deteriorated. You can hear it, smell it, see it. Shattered ceramics rattle in the metal casing as the car drives over rough roads. Exhaust gases with a faulty catalyst acquire a hydrogen sulfide odor. Their color also changes from nearly transparent to black or gray. When driving, a warm engine hardly gains more than 3 thousand revolutions.
Step 2
Lift the VAZ car onto a lift or drive it onto the overpass. Or remove the catalytic converter above the garage pit.
Step 3
A stainless steel housing, inside which the catalyst is placed, is integrated into the system just behind the engine exhaust manifold. Remove the two nuts securing the resonator pipe to the catalytic converter. Remove the spring washers. Take out the bolts.
Step 4
Remove the two bolts securing the catalytic converter to the downpipe of the muffler. Remove the bolts together with the springs, making sure to support the catalytic converter with your hand so that it does not fall. The ceramic of the catalyst is fragile and deteriorates from impacts, water ingress on a heated housing, due to low-quality fuel, engine malfunctions, and much more. For example, city driving with short runs and frequent engine starts clogs the honeycomb with fuel and soot. And on high-speed lines, the catalytic converter overheats.
Step 5
Remove the catalytic converter from under the vehicle. Purchase a new catalytic converter and install it in its place in the reverse order of removal. Often, the high cost of a catalyst becomes an obstacle to its replacement.
Step 6
Cut the old catalyst, shake out its filling so that the tank becomes empty, weld the metal and reinstall it. Or, instead of a neutralizer, weld in a piece of heat-resistant pipe of a suitable size. And for the correct operation of the lambda probe (oxygen sensor), install an electronic catalyst emulator (blende), which simulates the presence of a working device.
