Sometimes it becomes necessary to remove the rear or front bumper from the car - for example, if it is damaged. Of course, in order to remove the bumper, you can contact the employees of any car service. But if you do not have the opportunity to seek help from qualified specialists, you can try to remove the bumper yourself.
- Removing the rear bumper is a little easier than the front one: it is usually secured with two hex bolts on the left and right side of the vehicle. In sedan cars, fold back the luggage compartment mat, and in station wagons, remove the rear door trim completely. If there is a side trim in the luggage compartment, it must also be removed from the clips and pulled slightly to the side.
- Now you need to carefully insert a socket wrench with an extension (optimal length - 500-600mm) between the rear wing and the skin, put it on the bolts that secure the bumper, and unscrew them.
- Then you need to unscrew the self-tapping screws on the left and right that connect the bumper to the fender liner, and separate the sides of the rear bumper from the brackets on the body. Usually, it is enough to simply press down hard on the bumper and at the same time remove it from the body by the upper edge. Lifting the bumper over the wheel arch liners, carefully remove it.
- Removing the front bumper involves removing the radiator grille on the left and right - only then will you gain access to the bumper mounting bolts. To do this, you need to open the hood and carefully dismantle the lower protection of the engine compartment.
- Now you need to find a Phillips bolt in the middle behind the bumper and unscrew it. The radiator grille inserts located at the bottom of the bumper on the left and right sides must be disconnected and removed. Below them you will see a hex bolt that needs to be removed.
- On the rear lower ends of the bumper, left and right, there are plastic dowels - these also need to be removed. Now, to disconnect the end pieces of the bumper from the body brackets located on the wing, it will be enough to simply push the bumper down from the side, moving its upper part away from the body. The ends of the bumper should be gently pry over the wheel wells and removed by pulling forward.
- If the car model requires direction indicators or fog lights in the bumper, the appropriate cable connections must be disconnected. If the car has headlamp washers, do not forget to disconnect the hoses from the injectors, and close the injectors themselves with plugs. Bumper trims can be removed separately. The license plate holder located in the center of the bumper is usually secured with two bolts that can be easily removed.
