Every conscientious motorist should check the braking system of his car for serviceability or wear every 10,000 km, more often if necessary, if the brakes suddenly begin to make a sound like a squeal or the car pulls in one direction, or if vibration is felt in motion when pressing the brake pedal … Do not confuse this with emergency stop ABS. Today, the vast majority of cars are manufactured with disc brakes. Fewer cars with a combined brake system (front - disc, rear - drum).
When checking disc brakes, it is necessary to measure the thickness of the pads on the pads. If a steel base plate is visible, the pads must be replaced. To check the serviceability of disc brakes, you must:
• Jack up your car, remove the front wheel. Do not forget about safety (we use wheel shoes).
• Before you brake disc, it is a rotor. Run your hand along both sides of the disc from the center to the edge. This will allow you to feel the wear on the disc. If you feel uneven wear or the disc is worn out badly, you need to contact a technician to determine the possibility of further operation of the brake disc (after boring) or a replacement is necessary.
• Now you need to check the brake caliper.
• Attention! If the vehicle has recently been used, the caliper will be hot. If not, wrap your hands around it and wiggle it from side to side to make sure the mounting studs and lugs are in good working order.
• Pay attention to the brake pads. If the thickness of the brake pads is thirty percent of the thickness of the pads on the new ones, the pads must be replaced.
• Before replacing the pads, the caliper piston must be sunk into the body so that the caliper can easily slide off the brake disc. After that, it is necessary to unscrew one of the mounting bolts, move the caliper and replace the pads. Reassemble in reverse order.
Important: after replacing the pads, for their normal operation, they need to be ground in. To do this, on the go, you need to press the brake several times with a force close to emergency.
