Step 1

Check the quality of the grounding tires of the power unit and the battery, its connection to the generator contacts, if the voltmeter shows a voltage below 13 V. Check the No. 5 fuse if the “battery” indicator lamp has stopped burning and the instruments on the dashboard do not work. It is located in the relay box (VAZ-2108), or No. 10 for VAZ-2105, 07. Check the voltage at plug “61”, first remove it from the generator. With the ignition on, the voltage should be 12.5 V. Check the condition of the additional resistors in the fuse box.

Step 2

Check the integrity of the armature winding. To do this, use a test lamp and a battery, first remove the integral stabilizer to make it easier to access its ring contacts. Using it, check the short circuit of the armature winding to the case.

Step 3

Check the integral stabilizer of the generator. To do this, connect a lamp (12 V for 1-3 W) to the brushes of the integral stabilizer (H, W). Connect a voltage of 12 V between its body (ground) and its outlet under the contact and the "positive" terminal. At the same time, the lamp should light up. When the voltage rises above 15-16 V at the “B” terminal, it should go out. Otherwise, the integral stabilizer should be replaced.

Step 4

Remove the generator from the vehicle and disassemble it. Take a test lamp and check all the diodes of the generator. Three subsidiary and six main. It should be noted that to simplify the design, three power diodes have an anode on their body, the other three have a cathode. Consider this fact when checking the diode bridge. Disconnect the stator winding taps from the diode bridge before testing.

Step 5

Check visually and with a battery and a test lamp for a short circuit in the stator winding. They are connected to each other by a star without forming a midpoint. In case of misalignment due to the rotation of the armature, replace the generator bearings with new ones. The normal voltage at the generator output should be 13, 8-14, 5 V. The main malfunctions in the operation of the generator set: continuous discharge of the battery, the voltage of the on-board network below 13 V, boiling off of the battery electrolyte at a voltage above 16 V.
