The retaining ring is used for fastening various elements to the shafts and axles of the gearbox and the car engine. The inner one is used for mounting on the hole, the outer one is for mounting on the shaft. Sometimes, in the process of repairing a car, you have to disassemble parts that have such rings, in particular, when replacing bearings in the wheel hubs.

Necessary

  • - circlip remover;
  • - bearing puller;
  • - vice;
  • - a hammer.

Instructions

Step 1

Remove the car's front suspension strut. Place the part in a vise. Use a hammer to knock out the hub. Replace bearing. To do this, release the inner circlip by lightly hitting the remainder of the bearing in the hub with a hammer. Remove the bearing circlip with a circlip remover. It is a hand tool similar to pliers with removable straight or curved tips. If you do not have one at hand, you can use two screwdrivers of the correct diameter to remove the retaining ring.

Step 2

Remove the bearing with a bearing puller. Knock out the part remaining in the hub. This can be done using a mandrel with a suitable diameter. Clean all parts from old grease, lubricate all internal surfaces with a thin layer of lithol. Install the inner circlip with a circlip puller and then the new bearing into the knuckle housing.

Step 3

Install the outer circlip into the knuckle seat. Press the hub into the bearing until it stops, while the support must fix the inner ring of the bearing, otherwise it can be damaged. Reinstall the vehicle's front suspension strut. Check the wheel alignment angles.

Step 4

To replace the bearings in the rear hubs, remove the wheel in which you need to change it. After removing the brake drum, remove the oil seal with a screwdriver. Take out the inner race of the inner bearing. The outer ring of the outer bearing must be knocked out with a hammer, hitting it on the cutter's bit. Also use a hammer and a bit to press out the outer ring of the inner bearing. Clean all parts, lubricate them with new bearing grease, install the outer ring of the inner bearing into the hub using a suitable mandrel.

Step 5

Press the outer race of the new outer bearing into the hub in the same way. Install the lubricated inner bearing inner ring and oil seal. After you put the brake drum on the trunnion, secure the inner race of the outer bearing with a washer and a hub nut. Replace the wheel. Check the wheel alignment angles.
