The bearing is an indispensable element of any movable structure. It is part of the support or stop that supports the shaft, the axle with the required rigidity. As its name suggests, a wheel bearing is part of a hub, a disc used to secure a car wheel to an axle.
Instructions
Step 1
According to the existing classification, wheel bearings are rolling bearings, consisting of two rings, rolling elements and a cage that separates the rolling elements from each other. The most commonly used hubs are double row angular contact, single row deep groove ball and single row tapered roller bearings. Hub bearings are available for front and rear wheels. They are characterized by high strength and durability, allowing them to withstand very heavy loads. Incorrect installation may be the reason for their failure.
Step 2
To avoid this, do not use sharp tools that can damage the surface and seal of the bearing and lead to oil leakage. If it is necessary to press in the bearing so that the force is not transmitted through the rolling elements, use a mandrel or a holder of old parts.
Step 3
When installing a tapered bearing, first adjust the bearing clearance correctly. If the gap is too small, the element will overheat. However, a large gap can also cause damage. Problems with wheel bearings are usually indicated by characteristic extraneous noise - knocking or buzzing all over the body, right or left.
Step 4
For a more accurate determination of the location of the malfunction, drive the car to the nearest car service, where there is a special stand. There, switch to an overdrive, give maximum revs and turn off the engine. Then you can hear noises from faulty bearings. Diagnostics usually does not take long.
Step 5
The procedure itself for replacing both the front and rear bearings is no different. As practice shows, it is still better to replace wheel bearings in a car service using a hydraulic press. Self-replacement without special equipment does not guarantee quality. So, for example, dirt entering the bearing can damage the machine.
