The outboard bearing is mounted on the propeller shaft and allows it to rotate. It is used on rear wheel drive vehicles that use such a system. The indication for its replacement is a hum at the point of attachment of the propeller shaft. If this is not done in time, the bearing will jam and the vehicle will stop. Most often, this problem occurs in VAZ cars with rear wheel drive.

Necessary

  • - open-end wrench for 12 and 13;
  • - socket wrench with heads for 13 and 27;
  • - aluminum guide;
  • - a hammer;
  • - pliers;
  • - clamping puller.

Instructions

Step 1

When buying an outboard bearing, pay attention to the smooth running and elasticity of the rubber part. If at the same time rotation occurs with hooks, such a knot does not last long. It is imperative to buy a crosspiece and retaining rings.

Step 2

Work on a pit, lift or overpass. Remove the propeller shaft of the VAZ car by unscrewing the bolts 13 that secure the outboard bearing. Unscrew the nuts securing the cardan to the rear axle. If the threads on the bolts and nuts are damaged, they will need to be replaced.

Step 3

On the removed gimbal, mark with a core to collect it according to these marks in the same sequence. If this is not done, vibration and beating of the cardan will be observed. Then remove the retaining rings from the cross using pliers. To do this, install the universal joint so that the cross is suspended, and using a hammer and a mandrel, knock out all the cups of the cross. Clean the loose lugs, especially paying attention to the grooves in the circlip.

Step 4

Insert the cups gently into the eyelets. When doing this, be careful not to scatter the needles from the cup. Place the cups in place with the aluminum spacer, hitting gently with a hammer until the grooves for the retaining ring are visible. Install the circlip into the groove. Do this operation on the crosspiece four times, in each of the lugs.

Step 5

Then proceed to remove the old and install a new outboard bearing. Insert the syringe end of the propeller shaft into the flange of the flexible coupling. Using a 27 head, unscrew the nut that secures the hinge fork to the front shaft. Pull the fork off the hinge using a tie-down puller. Remove the outboard bearing from the shaft, which may require a puller, if it does not work, just knock it off the shaft. Then install a new bearing and assemble the universal joint in the reverse order, focusing on the marks.
