From the engine compartment of your dozen, you hear a shrill squeal and howl as soon as you start the car, and when you remove the alternator belt, the noise disappears? You can be sure that the generator bearing has failed in your car.

Repair step by step

1. Disconnect the wire terminal from the negative terminal of the storage battery.

2. Remove the engine protection if you have one. To do this, on the left and right sides of the engine protection, unscrew the two self-tapping screws that secure the protection to the mudguards of the engine compartment. Then, using the “10” head, unscrew the two bolts of the rear mounting of the engine protection. Now, holding the protection, turn off the five nuts of the front fastening of the engine protection with the head on "10" and remove it.

3. Loosen the nut fastening the alternator to the upper bracket and turn the adjusting bolt with a wrench “10” counterclockwise, decreasing the tension of the alternator belt. Move the alternator to the cylinder block and remove the belt from the alternator pulleys and crankshaft.

4. Disconnect the wire harness from the generator D + terminal. Remove the protective rubber cap from the "B +" terminal of the generator and with the head at "10" unscrew the nut securing the wire tip and remove the wire tip from the generator output.

5. Using the “13” head, unscrew the generator upper mounting nut and the adjusting bolt. Then remove the tension bar.

6. Using the “13” head, unscrew the nut of the lower mounting bolt of the generator and pull out the spacer sleeve.

7. Holding the generator by hand, remove the bolt of its lower fastening and remove the generator.

8. Begin disassembling the generator. Using the head on "8", unscrew the nut and remove the terminal from the output "D +" of the generator. Using the head on "8", unscrew the three nuts securing the casing and remove the casing of the generator.

9. Remove the three washers from the generator casing mounting studs. Mark the relative position of the generator covers with a marker.

10. Using the “7” head, unscrew the four bolts tightening the covers, and remove the back cover with the stator assembly.

11. Put on the nut of the alternator pulley the high head on “24” and through its hole insert the hexagon on “8” into the bore of the rotor shaft. Unscrew the alternator pulley retaining nut by clamping the head to "24" with a pipe wrench or in a vice.

12. Remove the spring washer, pulley and spacer washer. Push the rotor shaft out of the front cover.

13. To replace the front bearing with a slotted screwdriver, unscrew the four screws securing the bearing pressure plate and remove it. Use your hands to push the bearing out of the seat. If you cannot push the bearing out with your hands, knock it out using a mandrel or tool head of a suitable diameter.

14. To replace the rear bearing with a two-arm puller, press the bearing off the rotor shaft. To install new generator bearings, perform all the operations described in reverse order.

Useful Tips

After removing the alternator belt, check its condition for cracks, tears and peeling of the rubber from the fabric base. Replace it if necessary.

If the stator does not come out of the front cover, hook it with a screwdriver from different sides relative to the front cover.

When pressing the generator bearing with a two-grip puller, make sure that the puller screw rests exactly on the center of the shaft to avoid damage to the plastic insulator of the rotor slip rings. To install the puller grips, two flats are made on the plastic rotor sleeve.
