An elevated coolant temperature can be both a boon and a disaster for an engine. Probably, more than once you had to be an eyewitness of how in the summer a car is in a "traffic jam" with the alarm on and the hood raised, and steam is coming from the radiator. This is engine overheating. If the temperature of the engine is not met in winter (the temperature is less than the operating temperature), this also leads to increased wear of parts, increased fuel consumption and other troubles. How can you avoid this?

Step 1
After analyzing the causes of engine overheating in summer, try to use this knowledge to address the issue of an increase in coolant temperature in winter. If in summer you tried to cover as little as possible the area of the radiator from the air passing through it, in winter, on the contrary, you need to reduce the amount of air passing through the radiator. To do this, install adjustable blinds in front of the radiator or fix insulation to its grille. By changing the size of the holes in the insulation, you can change the amount of cold air passing through the radiator.

Check and close the bottom of the engine compartment as tightly as possible.
In order to insulate the engine from above, use a heat insulator that has such properties as incombustibility, has a low thermal conductivity. Use only original insulation that is attached to the hood from the inside to avoid possible trouble.

Another device in the cooling system that is responsible for the temperature of the coolant is the thermostat. On some cars, a thermostat that has served for more than a year loses its technical characteristics: the valve opens and directs the coolant in a large circle (through the radiator) at a temperature 4-5 degrees below the required one. Check the operation of the thermostat and replace if it malfunctions. If your car has a thermostat with a valve opening temperature of 83 ° -87 ° (to comply with western environmental standards), change it to a thermostat with a valve opening temperature of 92 °.

If the car is completely healthy, follow these simple tips to raise the engine temperature:
- timely replace the old used antifreeze with a new one;
- after starting, warm up the engine to a temperature of 40-50 degrees and calmly start driving;
- continue driving at low speed and rpm 2000-3000 until the engine warms up to operating temperature.
