The design feature of Subaru cars is boxer engines. Apart from this company, only Porsche produces boxer engines for passenger cars. And replacing candles on such an engine does not at all require disassembling half of the car, as it might seem.
Necessary
candle wrench standard or self-improved
Instructions
Step 1
Distinguish replacement of spark plugs on boxer engines with one and two camshafts. In the first type of engine, the candle channel is installed with a lateral slope (upward when viewed from under the hood). In the second type - perpendicular to the plane of the cylinder (horizontally when viewed from under the hood). On Forester and Outback models, it is more convenient to change the candles from the bottom. To do this, place the car on a pit, overpass or lift and remove the engine protection.
Step 2
On an engine with two camshafts, a standard spark plug wrench is not suitable due to the proximity of the spar to the spark plug channel. To upgrade a key, knock out the cotter pin from the handle of the standard key and remove the handle. Cut 75 mm from the ratchet adapter, grind the cut, insert in place of the removed handle and cotter. In this case, a new spark plug wrench, recessed in the spark plug channel, should protrude with the adapter no more than 1 cm from the plane of the valve cover.
Step 3
Once near the spark plugs, disconnect the wire from them. A specialized tool is intended for the correct disconnection of high-voltage wires from the candles, but its use is not mandatory. Insert the spark plug wrench into the channel and unscrew the candles, pushing it into the gap between the block head and the spar. To increase the comfort of work, you can remove some of the attachments on the sides of the power unit: filter housing, battery, washer reservoir.
Step 4
New spark plugs must meet in their parameters the requirements set out in the specifications and on the VECI engine compartment label. The gap between the electrodes must be adjusted. Check it with a dipstick. Before installing, blow out the spark plug channel with compressed air, and lubricate the threads on the new plugs with anti-seizing sealant.
Step 5
Place the plug to be installed in the plug hole. Make sure the spark plug is installed straight. Tighten the spark plug with a torque wrench to the correct tightening torque. At the same time, avoid thread stripping - repair and restoration of threads is very expensive. In a rotating motion, connect the high voltage wire to the spark plug. Reinstall all dismantled parts.
