To improve comfort, air conditioners are installed in the interiors of modern cars, which, like other devices, sometimes fail. This is often caused by a compressor breakdown. Try to repair it yourself.

Necessary

  • - screwdriver;
  • - fluorescent paint;
  • - lamp or flashlight with UV light;
  • - ohmmeter.

Instructions

Step 1

Determine the problem with the compressor. First of all, check its fuses, replace them if necessary, tighten the mounting bolts. Sometimes this is enough to get the compressor back on line. If everything is ok with the fuses, continue troubleshooting.

Step 2

Check the wires leading to the compressor, the tightness of the contacts, the tension of the compressor drive belt, which may be damaged. Replace damaged bridle or belt.

Step 3

Check the electromagnetic clutch as follows. Determine first if there is grease on the pressure plate and rotor, inspect the clutch bearing for noise and grease leakage. Measure the resistance of the coil with an ohmmeter. Replace it if its resistance is higher or lower than required.

Step 4

If the compressor makes a lot of noise during operation, this means that the drive pulley bearing has failed. Replace it with a new one, remembering to use a special lubricant. Check the operation of the drive pulley and clutch, replace them if faulty.

Step 5

Test the compressor refrigerant for leaks. This can be done using fluorescent paint. Buy a sachet of this paint from any auto shop. Add it through the low pressure port on the air conditioner canister in the car. Wait a while.

Step 6

Inspect the compressor and the entire air conditioner with a UV lamp. If a leak is found, find out what caused the leak. This can be mechanical damage to the compressor, refrigerant lines or destruction of their walls due to corrosion.

Step 7

Evaluate the possibility of repairing damage. If you decide to "patch" them, keep in mind that this can only be done using special equipment ("spraying" or welding). Prime the compressor after repairing the damage using the purchased A / C refueling kit.

Step 8

If you checked the compressor, identified problems in its operation, fixed them, but it did not help, then you should seek help from the car service specialists to resolve the issue of repairing or replacing it.
