When the timing belt breaks, in the vast majority of cases, the piston strikes the valves, causing them to bend. The bent valves must be replaced, and to remove them, you will have to do a rather difficult job.

Necessary

  • - a set of socket and ring wrenches;
  • - device for compression of valve springs;
  • - flat screwdrivers.

Instructions

Step 1

Drive the car into the garage and let the engine cool completely.

Step 2

Open the hood, put some good lighting under the hood.

Step 3

Begin by removing the air filter housing, ignition high voltage wires, and electrical wiring fasteners attached to the valve cover bolts and other support fasteners attached to the cylinder head.

Step 4

Unscrew the valve cover fixing nuts, fold them into the box. Carefully, using a flat screwdriver, separate the valve cover from the cylinder head. Place it upside down on a piece of cardboard to prevent oil from dripping from it.

Step 5

Remove the alternator belt, and then the timing belt covers. Remove the remnants of the old belt.

Step 6

Disconnect all electrical connectors from the carburetor.

Step 7

Disconnect the exhaust manifold from the exhaust flange. Make sure the exhaust manifold has no additional attachments to the cylinder block. If so, disconnect the manifold from the cylinder block.

Step 8

Carefully inspect the cylinder head, draw a diagram of the location of the mounting bolts. If you don't have to remove the camshaft to access the bolts, then you can safely proceed to dismantling the cylinder head.

Step 9

Remove the cylinder head mounting bolts. It is best to unscrew the bolts in order from the edges to the middle of the block.

Step 10

Separate the cylinder head from the block itself.

Step 11

Study the condition of the valves carefully. While turning the camshaft, inspect the closed valves for a snug fit to the seats. You can see the bent flaps right away. Mark the valves to be replaced.

Step 12

Dismantle the rocker arm shaft and, using a valve spring compressor, press down on the spring plate of the damaged valve. While holding the valve on the back with your finger, use a flat screwdriver to remove the 2 crackers holding the valve. Try not to lose them. Carefully unclench the valve spring and remove it. Then remove the valve. Remove any damaged valves in the same way.
