When braking a car, the greatest force is applied to the front brake pads. Therefore, their condition depends to the greatest extent on how safe the operation of the car will be.
The condition of the front pads should be checked regularly - every 15,000 km. The pads must be replaced if the friction lining of at least one of them has decreased to 1.5 mm. Pads usually wear out unevenly, but you need to replace all at once. It is not allowed to swap pads or rearrange from one wheel to another.
The procedure for replacing the front brake pads is simple, and even a novice car enthusiast can do it.
Preparatory work
Park the vehicle on a level, dry area and place wheel chocks under the rear wheels. Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and place the stops. Remove both front wheels. Coat all fasteners with WD-40 Liquid Grease, but be careful not to get the grease on the brake disc.
Unscrew the lid of the brake fluid reservoir; if the fluid volume approaches the maximum, take it off with a rubber bulb or syringe so that less than half of the reservoir remains.

Use a pair of pliers to remove the two spring cotter pins from the pins that secure the brake pads. After that, carefully knock the upper pin out of the seat with a hammer, using a screwdriver or a metal rod of a suitable diameter. Remove the two flat springs holding the pads and then remove the second pin.
Insert a mounting paddle between the brake disc and pad, then fully press the piston into the brake cylinder. Do the same with the second brake pad. Now take out the old brake pads.
Clean the seats with a flat screwdriver before installing new pads. Lubricate the fixing pins with lithol before installing - next time they will be much easier to remove.
Replacing the front brake pads on a VAZ - 2109 car
Remove the brake hose from the bracket on the A-pillar together with the O-ring. Insert a mounting paddle between the inner pad and the brake disc, then gently push the piston into the brake cylinder until it stops.
Bend the angle on the upper brake bolt lock washer. Unscrew the top bolt with one wrench, while holding the guide pin by the hexagon with the second wrench. Rotate the brake mechanism down around the axis of the second bolt and remove the pads.
Clean any dirt from the brake pad seats using a wire brush. Check the condition of the protective rubber covers on the guide pins, replace torn covers.
Install the front pads, lift up the brake and install the top bolt while also holding the dowel pin on the hex. After tightening the bolt, bend the corner of the lock washer.
After completing all installation work, install the front wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground. Press the brake pedal all the way down several times so that the brake pads are in the working position. Then check the brake fluid level in the reservoir and top up if necessary.
