The fuel consumption of a car with an injection engine can be adjusted by adjusting the system. Step 1

Check the injector for the passage of fuel by its mechanical part in the "closed" position. Gasoline leakage can be caused by the sealing of one injector (for engines with "central injection"). To check, remove the cover from the injector and turn on the ignition.

Step 2

Short circuit the contacts "FP" and "+ B" on the block of the diagnostic connector, the fuel pump should start working. Take a flashlight and observe the nozzle for a while. If fuel is dripping from it onto the throttle valve, it means that the sealing rings are out of order. Replace them.

Step 3

Inspect the engine coolant temperature (THW) sensor. Fuel consumption is calculated by the car's computer based on its readings. If the sensor shows a temperature lower than it actually is, then fuel consumption will naturally increase. The sensor can be mistaken due to a faulty thermostat, an air lock in the cooling system, a breakdown of the radiator. Check and eliminate the causes of these faults.

Step 4

Adjust the throttle position sensor using a multimeter and your vehicle manual. If it is initially set incorrectly, then this can lead to increased idle speed, incorrect ignition timing and incorrect air-fuel mixture.

Step 5

Check the oxygen sensor, or rather the tightness of the air supply system. If there is damage in it, then the sensor perceives excess air as a lean fuel mixture, and automatically adds fuel.

Step 6

Determine if excess air is being sucked in with an aerosol can with a combustible mixture. Start the engine, direct the aerosol jet to the possible places of damage in the "corrugation". If there is such a leak, then the engine speed will increase.

Step 7

Unscrew and inspect the spark plugs. Black carbon deposits on them indicate that the fuel mixture is over-enriched, which leads to increased gasoline consumption. A common cause of this is a dirty air filter. Change it.

Step 8

Inspect the vehicle fuel line if the spark plugs are light-colored. This means that the pressure in the fuel system is low, resulting in a decrease in engine power. Low pressure can be caused by worn fuel pump, clogged filter or mesh. Eliminate them. To perform more complex work on adjusting the injection system, motorists with little experience are better off contacting a car service.
