The drive wheels are located on the axle to which the torque is transmitted: it is these wheels that are connected to the engine. The driven wheels just roll. There are several types of drives: front, rear and full. Each of these drives has its own characteristics.

Necessary

  • - tools;
  • - differential;
  • - viscous couplings.

Instructions

Step 1

Find out the basic principles of the four-wheel drive car. The main knot in this system is the differential. To ensure a different speed of rotation of the driving pair of wheels, an inter-axle differential is used, and an inter-axle differential is used for the drive shafts.

Step 2

The differentials used can be locked and free, as well as symmetrical and asymmetrical. The torque in symmetric differentials is distributed equally between the differentials, and unevenly in asymmetric ones. In order for the four-wheel drive to work normally, the transmission must have an interaxle and two cross-axle differentials.

Step 3

In modern four-wheel drive vehicles, a viscous clutch is used. The device uses a silicone fluid, which helps to reduce the difference in the speeds of rotation of the drive shafts.

Step 4

When one of the wheels slips as a result of heating, the viscosity of the silicone fluid increases significantly, due to which the viscous coupling disks are connected, and the rotation of the drive shafts is carried out at the same speed. To create an all-wheel drive, use a combination of a free center differential and a viscous coupling, which act as a locking device operating in automatic mode.

Step 5

The second locking device is a limited slip differential. During movement, such a differential distributes the torque between the axles equally. The principle of operation of this device: as soon as the slipping of the wheels of one axle begins, the torque is immediately transferred to the second axle, the wheels of which have the best grip.
