When buying a car, I really want it to be cozy in the cabin, and the trim to retain its original appearance as long as possible. But most often it happens that the outside of the car looks like new, but inside the cabin, thanks to the efforts of small children or your pets, the appearance of the skin has suffered. You can fix this by re-sewing the seat covers yourself.
Necessary
- - old seats;
- - a sharp knife (scalpel);
- - twigs from the old seat (stiffeners);
- - fabric, leather or imitation leather;
- - thick threads;
- - scissors.
Instructions
Step 1
Decide what material you will be sewing the seat covers. If your car doesn't have air conditioning, you shouldn't choose leather or leatherette. In the summer you will not be comfortable, and in the winter it will be cold. In this case, opt for fabric covers. But the fabric must be strong, not susceptible to rapid abrasion. Once the material is selected and purchased, proceed to the next step.
Step 2
Then remove the old seat covers as carefully as possible. It is important not to break them, they will be your patterns.
Step 3
Then use a very sharp knife or scalpel to open the seams of the old covers. The sharpness of the knife is needed in order to separate the parts exactly along the former seams, so that it is easier to trace them when removing the pattern and see exactly how the parts are sewn. Do not throw away the iron rods that are inside the old seams, these will be the inner stiffeners of your new covers. If the twigs are damaged, look for a similar material to insert into new sleeves.
Step 4
Prepare a large, flat surface for transferring patterns. Lay out the prepared fabric or leather and carefully trace the details. If your sewing machine can sew the material with the same allowances as the old covers were sewn, then outline the parts without additional indents. If you need extra space for the presser foot, step back a few millimeters from the edge of the old cover. Cut out the details of future covers.
Step 5
Then you need to sew all the details together, removing the seams at the corners of the seats for beauty. It is better to choose thick threads so as not to cut through fabric or leather. The color of the threads also plays a role. The more contrasting the threads are chosen, the smoother the seams should be.
Step 6
After the new covers are ready, attach them to the interior of the vehicle.
