For proper tuning of the Ford Transit engine, it is very important to set the ignition correctly. Both the power and the efficiency of the motor directly depend on this. In addition, without a properly installed ignition, it is impossible to repair or diagnose the power system. To make adjustments, you need a stroboscope and a reference guide for your engine model.
Necessary
- - stroboscope;
- - wrenches;
- - hose
Instructions
Step 1
First of all, check the serviceability of the vacuum ignition timing controller. In the 80s and early 90s, mechanical ignition control systems were installed on Ford Transit cars. Such designs have proven to be unreliable, and since the mid-90s, unregulated automatic units with electronic ignition control have been used.
Step 2
Regardless of the design of the ignition distributor, its serviceability is checked using a tube that supplies a vacuum. To check, start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature at idle. Then, without changing the engine speed, disconnect the vacuum tube from the regulator pipe. Then, attaching a tube of soft material to the nozzle, create a vacuum with it. The engine speed should increase by 100-200 rpm. This means that the vacuum regulator is working properly.
Step 3
Checking the serviceability of the vacuum regulator is a very important procedure before adjusting the ignition timing. Missing this moment, the exposed ignition may be incorrect. Unfortunately, this mistake is often made by service workers. Connect the stroboscope to the motor as instructed in the instructions supplied with it. In most cases, to connect it, connect the supply wires to the battery terminals without reversing the polarity. Put the winding of the induction sensor on the high-voltage wire of the first cylinder.
Step 4
Look for alignment marks or graduation scale on the engine. Look for them on the crankshaft pulley at the front of the power unit or in the window above the flywheel. Often these marks are hidden under a thick layer of dirt and rust, so clean these areas and, if necessary, touch up the marks. If the engine has cooled down, start it and warm it up again. After that, leave to idle. Disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the regulator. Aim the strobe light at the alignment marks or scale. When the ignition is correctly set, the crankshaft and flywheel marks must be aligned.
Step 5
If the ignition timing is knocked down and the marks are not aligned, loosen the distributor adjusting bolt by first unscrewing the locknut. By rotating the distributor body clockwise or counterclockwise, achieve complete alignment of the marks on the crankshaft and flywheel.
Step 6
Take a short drive to check that the adjustments are correct. Engine detonation is allowed only with a sharp acceleration and should not last longer than 1 sec. If the engine power system has just been repaired, detonation may appear even with the ignition correctly set. In this case, it is necessary to make a half-hour trip before the accumulated carbon deposits in the cylinders are completely burned out. If after such a trip knocking does not disappear, set a later ignition timing.
