Removing the ignition switch on Mercedes-Benz is necessary if it needs to be repaired or replaced. This procedure is easily performed by one person, without anyone else's help.
Necessary
blade, steel wire 2 mm in diameter, file
Instructions
Step 1
Before starting work, do not forget to disconnect the ground wire from the battery in order to protect yourself from electric shock during these works. Then disconnect the ignition lock cylinder. To do this, take a small blade or any other thin object in your hands and carefully pick up the decorative cover of the ignition switch. Remove it and set it aside.
Step 2
Then insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the first position. Next, find a small piece of steel wire with a diameter of about 2 mm and bend it in the shape of the letter "U". Using a file, grind the ends of the wire from the inside at an angle of about 70 degrees. Insert the resulting structure into the grooves that are on both sides of the lock, and push down on the wire. This will allow you to squeeze the clips that hold the cylinder.
Step 3
Then detach the lower part of the dashboard trim from the driver's side. Disconnect the electrical connector from the lock, having previously marked its original position. Remember that on models with diesel engines, you must also mark the vacuum hoses and disconnect them.
Step 4
If you have a car with an automatic transmission, do not forget to unscrew the cable that is connected to the ignition switch. After that, slightly loosen the screw that secures the ignition switch and squeeze the locking pin. Next, remove the ignition lock from the steering column. Make sure that the key is in the first position throughout the entire process.
Step 5
During subsequent installation, make sure that the fixing pin is sure to fit into the hole in the steering column, and only then tighten the screw that is intended for fastening. Make sure that the electrical connector is connected correctly.
