In 1987, the Volga Automobile Plant pleased motorists with a new model called VAZ 2109. This iconic car, in the opinion of many drivers, is the best car ever produced by AvtoVAZ. Although the "nine" also had its drawbacks.
The VAZ 2109 model had several modifications. The very first "nine" was equipped with a 1, 3 liter carburetor engine. Further, more common modifications were produced - these are VAZ 21093 and VAZ 21093i. These models were equipped with a more powerful 1.5 liter engine. And the VAZ 21093i was even with an injection engine.
In 1991-1993, the VAZ 2109 received the so-called long front fenders.
Pluses of "nine"
According to the reviews of many owners, the VAZ 2109 was considered large, which is strange, because its length is 4 meters, width is 1.6 meters, height is 1.4 meters, and it weighs 945 kg. But I did not mean the dimensions of the car, but its wide doors, through which it was very convenient to get into the salon. All the doors of the car were really impressive in size. And in the trunk it was possible to put various loads that would not fit into the trunk of a conventional Zhiguli.
The front and rear suspensions of the car were very successful. Many drivers complain about the quality of domestic roads, and the VAZ 2109 was suitable for poor quality roads. Thanks to these suspensions, the driver and passengers of the "nine" felt less jolts and bumps.
The VAZ 2109 was equipped with a front independent suspension, and the rear was semi-independent, with a transverse beam.
The lightness of this car, of course, influenced the speed. And lovers of fast driving swiftly cut on "nines". It is clear that today this model cannot compete with modern cars, but for that time it was considered fast and rather dynamic.
Cons VAZ 2109
The VAZ 2109 model, from the beginning of its release from the assembly line in 1987, was equipped with an eight-valve engine, which was normal at that time. But the "nines" of the 21st century were also eight-valve, although many cars were already equipped with a sixteen-valve engine. The sixteen-valve engine outperforms the eight-valve in maximum power, maximum speed and maximum torque. So the "nine" began to lag behind in the literal sense.
It is also worth noting that according to the results of crash tests in 2002, the VAZ 2109 scored 2, 6 points out of 16 for a frontal impact and 0 out of 4 for safety. That speaks about the unreliability of the car in the event of an accident.
Despite the downsides, the car was extremely popular. However, in 2004, its production at AvtoVAZ ended. And the "nine" began to be produced in Zaporozhye (Ukraine) already at AvtoZAZ. And in 2011, the VAZ 2109 completely became history. Its production ceased, which upset many model lovers.
