You can make your own snow chain, it will help you in difficult situations - for example, if you need to drive off-road or get out of the mud. Such chains can even serve as an alternative to winter tires, if you rarely go out in winter.
Necessary
- - chain;
- - hooks;
- - tensioning devices;
- - grinder;
- - vice.
Instructions
Step 1
Find and buy the right chain. Please note that this must be a chain made of reinforced wire, otherwise, when towing or at high speeds, it may break and cause injury. Pay attention to the fastening of the links - they should be welded, not soldered. The length of the chain will depend on the design of the system, therefore, before going to the store, draw a diagram of the chain braid at home, taking into account the diameter of the wheel, inevitable waste and calculate the total length of the chain for all wheels.
Step 2
Choose a chain design based on the conditions of use and your capabilities. There are three main varieties: ladder, diamond and honeycomb. If you want a simple and easy-to-use system, make a chain in the form of a ladder. It will help a lot when driving off-road, but keep in mind that such a chain encourages the car to move in jerks, which is unfavorable for the drivetrain and suspension. The chain in the form of a diamond and honeycomb is more difficult to make, but the car will have a smoother ride, its handling will improve, the ability to bury itself in loose soil will practically be reduced to zero.
Step 3
If you decide to make the chains in the form of a ladder, use a grinder to cut four or two pieces of chain corresponding to the diameter of the wheel. In addition, cut the longitudinal chains of the structure, at least 10-16 pieces. The more crossbeams there are, the better the machine's cross-country ability.
Step 4
Fix the chain in a vise and use the hooks to connect the parts at an equal distance. Pay close attention to the number of links and the symmetry of the structure. Tension the chain using two tensioners.
Step 5
To secure the chains to the wheels, jack up the machine and put on the chain, then secure. You can also spread the chain on the ground and then hit it with the wheel. If your machine is single-axle drive, use chains only on the drive wheels, and on 4WD, equip all wheels. After you put on the chain, run in, 10-15 km and tighten the locks.
