Step 1
First you need to decide on the purpose of altering the speedometer. The reasons may vary. For example, the speedometer is broken. Or on a car, the speedometer shows the speed in miles, but you want to see it in kilometers. With any alteration of the speedometer, you need to take care of the place where the car will stand. A garage is best suited for this purpose, because you should not leave a car without a speedometer. Install the car in the garage. Apply the parking brake. Open the hood and remove the negative terminal from the battery to avoid a short circuit in the on-board power supply.
Step 2
It is necessary to dismantle the torpedo from the passenger compartment. To do this, carefully study the manual for your car. There you will find a diagram of the torpedo attachment. Unscrew all screws. Remove the steering wheel as it will get in the way. Unfasten all fasteners, slide the torpedo out of the fasteners a little. Disconnect all wires, having previously marked them so as not to get tangled. After that, remove the torpedo through the right passenger door.
Step 3
You need to get the instrument cluster out of the torpedo. It is a small rectangular box. Find all the glass fixtures. Open them and detach the glass. Be very careful not to scratch the wiring diagram or break the arrows inadvertently. Before removing the arrow, you need to make marks on which you will then set the speedometer. To remove the arrows, you can use a plastic fork or a special set. After a complete disassembly, you can upgrade the speedometer. If you want to change the color of the backlight, then change the bulbs or LEDs. You can also change the background of the speedometer. To change the color of the arrow, paint it carefully with a special paint.
Step 4
If the speedometer of your car shows the speed in miles, and you want to convert it into kilometers, then you need to make a new marking. The new markup must be printed on thick paper. The file for printing can be found at dealers or at the auto forum of your car brand. You need to print on matte paper to avoid glare from light. After all the manipulations, you need to assemble in the reverse order. Line up the arrow carefully. Make sure that dirt and dust do not get under the speedometer glass. After completing the assembly, check the performance of the speedometer.
