Step 1

A generator test stand is quite expensive equipment that is not available to every car owner, so some car enthusiasts prefer to make them with their own hands. So a device for spinning up a generator can be built from a motor with a friction clutch of a decommissioned industrial sewing machine, which were previously produced at the Podolsk or Orsha mechanical plants.

Step 2

It is preferable to use motors of higher power - 1 kW 2800 rpm. Using such a homemade stand, you can measure the following parameters: the operating voltage of the generator, the number of revolutions and the load current. In principle, other types of belt pulley motors suitable for the generator can be used. It remains to supply 12V to the generator, connect according to the diagram. Do not forget about the external relay (if any) and the mass.

Step 3

Then turn on the engine and measure the voltage at the generator output. Checking the generator on the bench makes it possible to determine the condition of the generator and its main characteristics as rated. In this case, it is necessary to observe a very important requirement - the generator brushes must be carefully ground to the collector slip rings, while the rings themselves must be clean. So, install the generator on the stand, turn on the electric motor of the stand, use the rheostat to set the output voltage to about 14V, and the rotor speed - up to 5 thousand rpm.

Step 4

After two minutes of operation in this mode, measure the amperage that the generator gives. A working generator will show at least 44 A. If the output readings are significantly less, then this may indicate problems in the rotor and stator windings, valve damage, wear of slip rings and brushes. If you have any suspicions about a malfunction of the valves of the rectifier unit of the generator, then check the recoil current on the preheated generator.
