The "Niva" car is an off-road passenger car with a load-bearing body structure and permanent all-wheel drive. Thanks to its excellent cross-country ability, it has won a well-deserved fame and demand in the market, as well as a permanent sales market abroad. You can increase the cross-country ability of this car either for the purpose of carrying out long trips and journeys on it, or to participate in various off-road competitions.

Step 1
Fitting larger wheels directly improves the vehicle's flotation. For amateur tuning of the Niva, tires with an outer diameter of 29 inches are quite suitable. For sporty and extreme tuning, the diameter goes up to 33 inches. To install such wheels, Niva simply needs an elevator. For 29-inch tires, use a 60mm lift. When installing even larger wheels, you will need to trim the wheel arches.
Step 2
Replace the main pairs with pairs with an increased gear ratio. This is necessary for the car to maintain and improve traction characteristics, including when installing heavier wheels. For wheels up to 31 inches, pairs with a gear ratio of 4.3 or 4.44 are suitable. If the outer diameter of the wheels is more than 31 inches, install rarer and more expensive pairs with a gear ratio of 5.38.
Step 3
Install limited slip differentials (self-locking). These devices will seriously help when slipping the Niva off-road.
Step 4
Replace the aluminum housing of the front axle gearbox with a steel one. Aluminum is too unreliable off-road. The steel body of the SKRPM, although expensive, is easy to install and justified when participating in competitions.
Step 5
It is recommended to fasten the transfer case to a special subframe. This will protect the transfer case from vibrations that increase with the age of the car and will allow the underbody protection to be attached to the same subframe.
Step 6
When overcoming serious off-road, when the risk of getting stuck is very high, self-rescue means are needed. Install an electric winch on the Niva. When paired with an electric winch, replace the battery with a model with an increased capacity, and the generator with a more powerful one.
Step 7
Install a snorkel to reduce unwanted effects when overcoming water obstacles. For example, to avoid water hammer.
Step 8
An expeditionary rack and additional lighting chandelier will be required on the roof. This will not directly affect the cross-country ability, but it will be very useful on a trip. And do not put a cable, a high-jack jack, shovels, ladders in the salon ?!
