Owners of new foreign cars can have their cars repaired under warranty. Many used car owners try to repair their cars on their own. One of the operations that can be done independently is replacing the timing belt.
On the same model of Suzuki cars, different engines can be installed, differing from each other in design. Therefore, the procedure for replacing the timing belt is shown on the example of a popular in Russia model of a car produced by the Suzuki plant - Suzuki Grand Vitara SQ 416 / SQ 420/420 WD.
Removing the timing belt
Disconnect the terminals from the battery. Drain the cooling system and disconnect the upper pipe from the radiator. Loosen the tension and remove the power steering and air conditioning compressor belts. Then remove the belt and pulley of the water pump. Then remove the electric radiator fan and fan shroud.
Remove the 5 bolts and remove the crankshaft ancillary drive pulley. Unscrew the screws and remove the upper timing belt guard.
Turning the crankshaft pulley with a wrench, set the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys to the reference marks. The mark on the camshaft pulley should be aligned with the mark on the cylinder head cover, and the mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley should align with the mark on the oil pump cover. If the marks on only one of the pulleys match, crank the crankshaft one more revolution.
Loosen the bolt on the idler pulley bracket, push the pulley away from the belt and remove the timing belt. Unscrew the bolts completely and remove the spring and tensioner roller together with the bracket.
Inspect the idler pulley for defects and smooth rotation. Replace the roller if there are signs of wear or noise or distortion during rotation.
Installing the timing belt
Reinstall the bracket and idler pulley. Do not fully tighten the retaining bolt in the slot in the bracket. Check the correct operation of the belt tensioner.
Put the timing belt on the crankshaft pulley and put it on the right side of the camshaft pulley, while this part of the belt should be tensioned, all the slack in the belt should be on the side of the tension roller. Then depress the tension roller and wind the belt behind it, the roller should touch the outside of the belt.
Check the installation of the pulleys according to the marks, if the marks do not match, reinstall the belt. If the marks coincide, turn the crankshaft a few turns and check the coincidence again. If the marks match and the belt is properly tensioned, tighten the fixing bolt on the idler roller bracket. If there is no coincidence of marks, the whole procedure will have to be repeated until all marks match.
Reinstall the timing belt guard. Install the accessory drive pulley to the crankshaft and bolt. Install the pulley and then the water pump belt. Put on and tighten the belt of the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor. Replace the radiator cooling fan shroud and fan.
Connect the pipe to the radiator and fill the system with coolant. Connect the battery and start the engine. Check for coolant leaks and the correct timing of the ignition timing.
